Built without legacy. Built to keep adapting.

Kairoi was created on the conviction that AI and agentic systems are going to change how software is built. The firms best positioned to deliver that future are the ones with the freedom to build for it from scratch.

Why Kairoi exists

Earned from a long arc, not a market trend.

After growing Asynchrony from a 1999 startup into one of the country’s leading agile development shops, watching it through a 2015 acquisition by WWT, and then significantly growing a second digital engineering company between 2020 and 2023, our founder Bob Elfanbaum had a deeply earned thesis: he understood how great software gets built, and he understood that even amazing technology companies couldn’t pivot fast enough away from their legacy processes, value propositions, business models, and engineering organizations to actually meet the disruption coming from AI.

Kairoi was designed with no legacy. So we could build the team, the methodology, and the proprietary IP for not just where AI is today, but in a way that remains adaptable for where AI is going.

It’s not that other firms aren’t trying to address this reality. It’s that they can’t react fast enough, given the burden of their current business models and organizations.

Why now

2024 was the moment.

2024 was the right time to start a firm built specifically for agentic delivery. The agentic developer tools and environments matured to a point where teams could move fundamentally faster. Over the two years since, we’ve adapted continuously: copying best practices we find in the world, leveraging the massive improvements in foundation models, and extending what we can deliver as the applications riding on those models continue to compound in capability.

A firm with no legacy gets to ride that curve directly. A firm with twenty years of methodology, tooling, and team structure has to retrofit, retrain, and renegotiate every step.

What we believe about AI

We’re built for the frontier’s next move, not its last one

The firm’s power isn’t that we built the right company for where technology is today. The power is that we built a company that can constantly adapt to and leverage the advancements happening around us.

We do that while maintaining sound architecture, security, and quality processes, so that what we deliver isn’t just a great demo. It’s a scalable application that leverages today’s innovation and is built to capitalize on continued innovation in foundation models and the ecosystems around them.

We are deliberate about the methodology this requires. Spec-based development (the practice of treating structured specifications as the interface between human judgment and machine execution) is one expression of it. It informs how every Kairoi engagement is structured.

Purpose-built beats general-purpose.

We are in the agentic software business at a moment when larger players could sweep in and deliver feature-killers to anything we do. We see this clearly. The advantage we hold today is the advantage any fast-follower or disruptor holds: larger players have to focus on general-purpose solutions, while we deliver rich, purpose-built experiences for the clients in front of us. Our discipline is to not stay attached to where we are today. If our core capabilities erode because the frontier moves, that’s fine. We will have maintained our pace and skated on to the next target-rich area.

Right-sized for the firms we serve

Our focus on mid-market PE firms, the portfolio companies they invest in, and similarly-sized owner-operated businesses is not an accident. AI enables us to meet their price-point expectations for capability delivery, and we can offer a personal delivery model larger firms cannot. We are well-suited for them, and they for us.

How we operate

Four operating principles, visible in week one.

01

We hire for agentic aptitude

It’s easy to hire people to use AI to quickly build applications. It’s hard to hire developers who can constrain, leverage, and iterate with AI to create secure, scalable applications. The latter is the hire we make.

02

Small teams of business and technical people

Without business alignment, we deliver technology rather than business impact. Small teams keep the business and the build coupled. They also stay focused. We don’t waste time keeping large teams aligned. The breadth of what we can take on is no longer constrained by team size; it’s constrained by the managed deployment of agents doing development.

03

Small teams aren’t a cost-cutting decision. They’re a clarity decision.

The economics work. But the real reason we run small is that the work stays connected to the people who are accountable for the outcome. There is no relay race between strategy and execution.

04

Compass is managed as a product, not a project artifact

Treating something like a product means we don’t get to the end of a project and call it done. Projects are about what you do in a moment in time. A product lives on beyond that. The benefit of building Compass AI as a product is that the platform continues to evolve. We publish a roadmap of where we’re going and why. We continue to support the capabilities a project delivers long after the project is over, by bringing new core platform capabilities that complement what was built. The investment to keep Compass secure, scalable, and extensible isn’t a one-time line item. It is on-going.

Where we’re going

A different kind of partner.

We are building the ability to quickly and cost-effectively deploy agentic systems linked to business value and impact.

We are already at the place where we can deliver fast, fixed-price technology solutions in weeks and months, rather than years.

In three to five years, we believe we will be at the point where we deliver a bespoke, customized solution to a company and only then ask them to pay for it. That is the model we are building toward: a partnership where companies don’t pay for development costs, but share in the value we drive into their organizations.

The people behind it

Kairoi is led by Bob Elfanbaum and Andrew Montgomery.

Built for what’s next, not what worked before.

If you’re evaluating AI delivery partners, the questions worth asking are about pace of adaptation, depth of conviction, and accountability for outcomes. We’d welcome the conversation.
